WHAT IS WOOL ?

Wool is a natural fiber derived from animal hair, which is then spun and sometimes dyed to create yarn used in weaving or knitting. It can come from a variety of animals.

Among the most familiar types of wool are traditional sheep’s wool, Merino wool from Merino sheep, cashmere from Cashmere goats, angora from rabbits, alpaca, mohair, and yak wool, to name a few.

Sheep’s wool is the most commonly used, and production of other wools remains relatively limited.

Wool is produced naturally throughout the year by shearing animals—it’s just a blend of fresh air, sunshine, grass, and water! Completely natural, renewable, and easily recyclable, it’s 100% biodegradable.

Moreover, the process of transforming animal hair into wool requires minimal energy. Additionally, wool yarns have excellent durability, resulting in a very long lifespan.

Furthermore, wool possesses many other qualities such as:

Thermoregulation

Antibacterial properties

Doesn’t retain odors or dust

Easy to clean

Hypoallergenic

Flame-resistant

That’s why wool has been used for centuries in the garment industry, especially in scarf production!

But let’s go through all the steps of making a Merino wool scarf.

FIRST STEP: WHERE DO THE RAW MATERIALS COME FROM ?

French scarf uses exclusively Merino wool and Cashmere wool in crafting our scarves. However, let’s delve into the details of Merino wool:

MERINO WOOL

It’s a natural fiber sourced from the long, fine hairs of Merino sheep. This breed, originating from North Africa, boasts a dense, uniform fleece of exceptionally high quality. Supple and soft, it offers unparalleled comfort to the touch—it doesn’t itch like traditional wool. Notably, Merino sheep produce the most wool per animal (8000 km of wool yarn per year). Presently, the largest flocks are found in New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa, and Australia.

Here at French scarf, we use this fantastic Merino wool for our scarves. Incredibly soft and cozy, it’s perfect for warding off those initial chills, without any of the itchiness associated with lower-grade wool. Additionally, our wool suppliers hail from northern Italy, a region in close proximity to Lyon, substantially reducing our carbon footprint. They share our commitment to eco-conscious practices. We’ve also opted to collaborate with this exceptional wool producer thanks to its myriad benefits, bolstered by numerous certifications:

ŒKO-TEX:

The Œko-Tex Standard 100 label ensures that textiles or products used during production are safe for both humans and the environment. It guarantees the absence of harmful substances in raw materials. Developed by the Austrian Textile Research Institute ÖTI and the German Hohenstein Research Institute in 1992, the following year, the two organizations were joined by the Swiss Textile Testing Institute Testex.

MULESING FREE:

Certified cruelty-free. Guarantees that Mulesing, a painful surgical procedure aimed at preventing parasites under the sheep’s skin, is not practiced. With this label, you can be confident that animal husbandry and shearing are conducted with full respect for the animal’s well-being, allowing you to make an informed choice for eco-conscious and ethical scarf purchases.

WOOLMARK:

100% pure virgin wool. The Woolmark label is globally recognized for its high quality and durability. It assures consumers of a premium product that will provide long-term satisfaction. The Woolmark Company rigorously monitors finished product quality and production processes, conducting test purchases and examining compositions, comfort levels, colorfastness, and shape retention after washing.

As a result, wool can be considered an environmentally friendly and sustainable material.
