How to wear a scarf

  • 4 November 2019

While there are many ways to wear a scarf, here we will discuss about the most basic knotting techniques and in particular the ones we like the most at French scarf. This article is far from exhaustive and is just meant to highlight some techniques that are good to know.

The easy to master simple knot

The most basic knot is the simple knot, and it is very easy to learn.

1. Just take the middle of the scarf in your hand,

2. Pass the folded scarf behind your neck,

3. Bring it back to the front,

4. You will then have one side with a loop and another side with the scarf’s two ends.

5. The last step is just to put the two ends into the loop to obtain a simple and effective knot.

This highlights the scarf’s style while also protecting the neck. This is French scarf’s favorite knot, it’s the one we most often use to make model photos of our scarves!

Scarf in a simple knot

One and a half turns around the neck

Another possible knot is to make a turn and a half around the neck with the scarf in order to get a volume of fabric on each side. You can wear the scarf this way or tie the two sides at the front with an additional loose knot. Wear the knot on the side for more style.

How to wear a shawl or oversized scarf

For a few years now, shawls and oversized scarves have been popular, but how can you tie such a heavy, large piece of fabric around your neck?

First way to tie an oversized scarf

Hold the scarf diagonally by folding the points towards the center, it thus takes the form of a regular scarf, you can then make the simple knot explained above.

Second way to tie an oversized scarf

You can also take the oversized scarf diagonally and wrap it around your neck with as many times as possible (do not tighten to maintain the scarf’s volume), then all you have to do is hide the remaining two ends under the oversize scarf. This way creates an infinity look.

Wearing an oversize square scarf

Another way to wear an oversized square scarf. Fold it in half diagonally to obtain a main point and two small ones on the sides. Then just position the main point in front of you and cross the two small points of the oversize scarf behind your neck and bring it back in front. The oversized scarf being heavy enough, there is no need to tie it to hold it in place!

How to wear a stole

Over the shoulders or like a scarf

The stole is a variation on the scarf, being wider and sometimes longer. It can be worn the same way as a scarf, for example with a simple knot. For a more refined look you can easily wear the stole over your shoulders with a knot in front or just pass it around your arms. To liven up a dress, for example, the stole is ideal and will stylishly replace a cardigan or jacket.

And there you have it, plenty of ideas to tie your scarf. There’s nothing left to do but choose your new scarf from French scarf!
